Obituary for Robert Stevens Winslow

Winslow, Robert S.

Robert S Winslow passed away on January 12, 2017 at the Juravinski Hospital. He was 71 years young. Predeceased by his parents Katherine Mitchell Winslow and Edward Winslow and his siblings Patricia, Edward and Sharon. Robert is survived by his wife Kathleen McConnell and their children Julia and Aidan, his daughter Robin (Shanae, Celine, Isis) his daughter Dezrae Gonsolves. Mr. Robert S Winslow came with $157 and a portable tv. His brother Edward drove. When the guard at the US/Canada border asked, Robert readily replied "Its for the NBA finals of course." It was 1970. He was not going to fight in Vietnam and he had no idea if Canada watched basketball. He wasn't taking any chances. Robert became a teacher, working in inner city Toronto with kids who like him, grew up mostly in public housing. Robert came from a black Baptist Washington D.C. family. He will be so terribly missed by his many former students, and his basketball friends. A heartfelt thank you to Dr. Brian Misiaszek and Dr. Douglas Oliver for their kindness and support during this difficult time. A memorial service will be held Tuesday January 17, from 11-1 pm with a funeral service beginning at 1pm at P.X. Dermody Funeral Home, 796 Upper Gage Ave., Hamilton. Donations can be made to the Juravinski Cancer Centre or St. Peters Hospital for Healthy Aging.
