Obituary for Edward Norman "Sam " Rankin

Rankin, Edward Norman “Sam”
Peacefully, and surrounded by family at Macassa Lodge on April 27, 2017 at the age of 84. Loving and dear husband of Katherine (Kay) for 56 years. Loving father of Luanne (Dave), Bonnie (Terry), Debbie (Ed), Theresa (Frank), Caroline (Pat) and Rob (Stephani). He cherished his 16 grandchildren who brought him joy and delight. Survived by brother Gerry, sister Evelyn Dunn and predeceased by parents George and Annie, brothers George, Jack, Lloyd, and Brice. Known as Edward, Norm or Sam, he had a nickname for everyone. He served in the Armed Forces in Germany after World War II and spent 30 years working at Stelco. He was an active member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #163. His sense of humour was ever present as was his love of family and friends. Special thanks to VON Nurse Linda for her extraordinary Love and Support. Thanks to the staff at Macassa Lodge for their kindness and care, to Annie at VON and the staff at Jurvinski Hospital. He faced his health challenges with infectious optimism and will be dearly missed. Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held at P.X. DERMODY FUNERAL HOME, 796 Upper Gage Ave. on Tuesday May 2, 2017 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Family and friends are invited back to the Funeral Home for a Celebration of his life and reception on Wednesday May 3, 2017 at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canadian Diabetes Association.
