Obituary for Elizabeth Ruth McIntyre

McIntyre – Elizabeth Ruth (Prentice) died peacefully Friday January 6th, 2017, in Dundas, Ontario. Beloved daughter of the late William and Mary (MacDonald) Prentice. Dear wife of the late Alfred C. (Mickey) McIntyre. Loving mother of Frances and Robert Coward of Calgary, AB, William of Dawson City, Yukon, Michael (deceased), James (deceased) and Joan of Shawnigan Lake, BC, Sister Mary CSJ of Dundas, ON, Rosann (Ann) of Brentwood Bay, BC, Judy and John Hunt of Bangkok, Thailand. Dear sister of the late Isabel, Fred and Margaret. Loving friend and proud grandmother of Andrew (Vicki), Sandra (Chris), Laura, Carly, Jesse, Andrew (Ngaire), Kate (Sean). Great grandchildren Aislyn, Crosby, MacKenzie and Brynn. Lovingly remembered by Meribeth Wood of Wasaga Beach, ON and friends and family in Scotland and New Zealand.
Betty had a love of music which started early on when she not only played the piano, but the trumpet in the Elora Boys and Girls Band. The band with six girls playing trumpets was a novelty and performed throughout southern Ontario, including for King George and Queen Elizabeth when they came to Canada in 1939.
After high school Betty completed her nurse’s training at St. Joseph's Hospital in Guelph, graduating in 1946, celebrating 70 years as a nurse in 2016. During her career, she worked in various fields of nursing including the VON. Betty developed the Registered Nursing Assistant Program at Conestoga College and served as the coordinator for 20 years until retiring in 1988. She was a founding member of the Guelph Wellington Hospice, the initial Guelph Aids Educational Committee, and the Bruce Peninsula Hospice. In the 1970s Betty returned to school graduating with her BA from the University of Guelph. Betty was an active member of St. Joseph’s Parish in Guelph and St. Thomas Aquinas Parish in Wiarton. It was a busy life but Betty and Mickey enjoyed travelling as well. Betty travelled widely with the nursing association always finding it interesting to visit hospitals and observe the health care systems in other parts of the world, such as Russia, Mexico, and Japan. She served as a consultant being invited to different areas of Canada and was particularly fond of her time in Iqaluit. Betty was a woman of deep faith and actively engaged with her family, the church and broader community. The funeral liturgy will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday January 13th, 2017 at the Sisters of St. Joseph’s Motherhouse Chapel, 574 Northcliffe Avenue, Dundas, Ontario. Family will receive friends prior to the funeral liturgy from 9:30 am – 10:45 am. Cremation has taken place. A Memorial Mass will be held in Wiarton at St. Thomas Aquinas Church in the spring. In lieu of flowers the family appreciates donations to the Sisters of St. Joseph in Canada or the Bruce Peninsula Hospice. Donation cards available at the funeral or online.
